What Would We Do Without Sheep?
by Sarita Orobio, Class of 2011 - 26 Jan 2009
Our grimy hands smelled like lanolin and grass. Fuzzy wool clung to our clothes.
Light streamed in through the windows, setting the orange windowsills on fire. Mrs. Palmer strode in confidently, arms laden with boxes filled to the brim with drop spindles and bags of unwashed sheep wool. The ninth and tenth graders settled in an eager circle, ready to begin. And now, after rolling wool on our legs, mastering the drop spindle, and finally seeing the dyed wool, we see all our efforts transform into warm, luxurious scarves.
When those were completed, we turned to weaving belts and headbands. The intricate diamond patterns have been woven into our memory and our hearts.
