Clang! Clang! Clang!
by Alexander Pitman, Class of 2012 - 26 Jan 2009
For four noisy Fridays the freshmen of the GBWHS journeyed to Mr. Graney's blacksmithing shop. There the students worked with metal, a unique experience for students.
If you think blacksmithing seems rough, hard, and uninteresting, you have the wrong idea. Although the shop is unheated, it is hard to concentrate on how cold you are when you are staring into a fire, hammering hot metal, or slicing copper with big intimidating machines.
In this class the freshmen have made fire pokers, coat hangers, and fruit bowls, which they then take home to use however they please.
It may seem like a hard job, but it's much simpler than it seems. Metal is heated up in the fire and pounded with hammers. When the metal is hot, a simple hit with a hammer will nearly flatten it. The work is not necessarily challenging, but does take time and patience.
As a freshman, I am glad and feel lucky to have had this experience.
