Open House on Thursday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.
by Rose Tannenbaum - 04 Feb 2005

The Great Barrington Waldorf High School will hold an open house on Thursday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the school, which is located on the second floor of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 454 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA, at the corner of Maple Avenue. There will be an exhibit of studentsí work, entertainment and refreshments. The public is invited, as are potential students and their parents.
GBWHS is a co-educational, college-preparatory high school, grades 9 through 12, with a fundamental commitment to excellence. The curriculum supports the artistic and practical goals of a Waldorf education, based on the pedagogy of Rudolf Steiner.
The school day consists of morning seminars, which cover an array of subjects in intensive blocks of three to four weeks each, ranging from thermodynamics to Shakespeare, trigonometry to history through art. There are two additional periods each morning, for language (Spanish or German) and math.
Afternoons have a varied schedule, including English, chorus, gym, and lab periods.
In addition to academics, GBWHS offers a Practical and Fine Arts Course, including painting and drawing, blacksmithing, basketry, glass blowing, pottery, woodworking and sculpture.
The school encourages a strong connection to the local community. Students make use of the Simonís Rock science lab and athletic facilities. There are field trips associated with the Local History seminar. High school students are required to do community service.
The Great Barrington school has established foreign visiting programs with the Munich, Germany, Waldorf school and the Waldorf school in Lima, Peru, and with a project for single women in Cuzco in the Andes. Groups of Great Barrington students will be going back to those places in spring, 2006.
Admission applications will be available at the open house, or at the school office. Financial aid is available based on need, once a student has been accepted.
